5 Tips to Start Living Healthy this National Nutrition Month

March is the National Nutrition Month and this year's theme is "Put Your Best Fork Forward". This theme is a reminder that each one of us holds the tool to make healthier food choices: our own forks!
 
Making healthier food choices doesn't mean that you should have strict dietary limitations or you should deprive yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it should be about choosing the food that can help you feel great, have more energy, have a stabilized mood and an improved health.
So if you're ready to live a healthier life, you can start with these 5 nutrition tips:
  • Watch portion sizes
    Take out the measuring cups and see how your portions are to the recommended serving.

  • Fill half your plate fruits and vegetables
    Fruits and vegetables add color, flavor and texture to your plate. Likewise, they give you vitamins, minerals and fiber. Experiment with different types - including fresh, frozen and canned

  • Explore new foods and flavors
    Add more nutrition and eating pleasure by expanding your range of food choices. When shopping, make a point of selecting fruit, vegetables and grains that are new to you.

  • Try to eat seafood
    Seafood - fish and shellfish - contains a range of nutrients including healthy omega-3 fats. Salmon, trout, oysters, and sardines are higher in omega-3s and lower in mercury.

  • Follow food safety guidelines
    Reduce your chances of getting sick by practicing proper food safety. That includes: regular hand washing, separating raw protein foods from ready-to-eat foods, cooking foods to the appropriate temperature by using a food thermometer, and refrigerating food quickly at a proper temperature to slow bacteria growth.

Tasty Recipe

Healthy Chicken Lettuce Wraps

Here's a healthy recipe to help you put your best fork forward!

For the wrap: 
-1 lb. chicken, cut in very small pieces 
-8 scallions, chopped 
-1 Tbsp. olive oil 
-16 lettuce (bibb or butter) leaves for wrapping 
-1 carrot shredded or finely sliced 
-Cilantro, finely chopped 
-1/4 cup lightly salted cashews, crushed 
 
For the sauce: 
-6 Tbsp. low sodium soy sauce 
-2 cloves garlic minced 
-2 Tbsp. honey 
-2 Tbsp. water 
-1 Tbsp. finely chopped ginger 
-1 Tbsp. rice vinegar 
-1 Tbsp. chili paste 
-1 tsp. cornstarch 
-Juice of 2 limes 

DIRECTIONS 
  • Place all ingredients of the sauce in a bowl and whisk to combine. Set aside. 
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. 
  • Add the scallions and sauté for 1 minute. 
  • Add the chicken and cook, stirring occasionally until it is browned. Add the cashews and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes, then add the sauce and cook for 1-2 minutes more. 
  • Remove from heat and scoop the chicken mixture into the lettuce leaves. 
  • Top with chopped cilantro, cashews, and shredded carrot and serve.

I've been interested in nutrition since my early adult years. That is when my mother began having more and more health problems.

She had been trained to totally trust her doctor, so when he told he she would have heart problems, it became a self fulfilling prophecy. As it turned out, the doctor completely missed her low thyroid until late in her life, and that was the cause of many of her health issues.

I decided in graduate school that i wanted to take charge of my health and not let a doctor dictate what I would do to stay well. Shortly after that I was introduced to Shaklee and have been using these wonderful products ever since.
